Hmm... I think i promised some tips for comprehension.
You likely know the notion "Everyone is a Hero in their own mind" - here we take it to extremes. Most of this happens inside our nameless me's mind, in which he's trapped - but not alone. All the pop cultural references are due to the world being constructed from the materials available, and some of those you see are parts of the mind that usually operate below the conscious level. They're aware of the intrusion and manipulation, and trying to counter it with their own. A few rare bits take place outside his head.
